Nate is an invertebrate zoologist, evolutionary biologist, and PhD student in the Department of Malacology of the Academy of Natural Sciences. He studies the systematics, ecology, and evolution of land snails on tropical islands, in particular the dynamics of insular evolutionary radiations in the superfamily Orthalicoidea. 

While an undergraduate at Bard College at Simon's Rock, he conducted the first comprehensive field survey of the land and freshwater snails of Montserrat, a volcanic island in the Eastern Caribbean. His most recent research (in collaboration with the Parent Lab at the University of Idaho) explores the biodiversity and evolutionary history of the endemic Orthalicoid land snails of the Galapagos Archipelago using comparative anatomy and phylogenomics. Nate has conducted systematics research at the Harvard MCZ, the Smithsonian NMNH, and many other east-coast museums of natural history. He holds a Research Associateship in the Department of Malacology at the Delaware Museum of Natural History.
